A couple of days ago, I talked about being a kid and enjoying the month of May. Today kids often do not have the chance to do this. If they are out for a spring sport, I can bet at least one coach is on their back about a fall or winter sport. The soccer coach wants them playing club soccer, the basketball coach wants them playing AAU basketball, and the football coach is screaming to get in the weight room. If I were running the IHSAA or any other state organization, I would ban this practice. I know one drawback of this, and that is a kid would probably pick one sport and not play year round. That is not what I want. I want the kid to be a kid and enjoy him/herself and have some fun. For 95+% of the kids, high school is their last chance at competitive team sports, so why the push for year-round participation in just one? I am sure the kid is the last one who wants this.
