Perhaps the gem of the tournament came in Wednesday’s Game 3 when Lock Haven shortstop Ilia Lopez laid out to her right to snag a low liner in the second then scrambled to her feet to gun down Humboldt State’s Francesca West off first. Davis, the former basketball coach whose son Keno took over the program last year, had served as special assistant to the athletics director since leaving the basketball program. The younger Davis left Drake after one year to become coach at Providence. Tom Davis, 69, also coached at Iowa, Stanford, Boston College and Lafayette.

Westfield State hired Bob Bontempo as head women’s golf coach and named Rich Sutter as head men’s golf coach. The women’s program is newly formed and the men’s squad is making a return to varsity status after a 20-year hiatus. Bontempo, who recently joined the PGA staff at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield, formerly was head coach at Mount Holyoke, where he guided that program to a second-place finish in the 1988 NCAA Division III national championships. Sutter has been head men’s basketball coach at the school for 11 seasons and also serves as the athletics department’s recruiting coordinator.
