Edgar Renteria, who drove in the game-winning run in the 1997 World Series as a 20-year-old, and 13 years later was named World Series Most Valuable Player, is leaning toward retirement, his agent told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
With Jay Bruce 15 pounds lighter this year as he reported to camp, manager Dusty Baker expects the right fielder to make adjustments in his hitting approach.
The only thing known about the Reds rotation is that Johnny Cueto is the No. 1 starter. As for the other four spots, that is a mystery. Manager Dusty Baker knows the plan, but wasn't sharing on Wednesday morning.
After the Reds picked up Phillips' $12 million option following the season, negotiations dragged all winter without resolution. So as an early arrival to camp Wednesday, Phillips found himself discussing the lack of an extension once again.
Reds right fielder Jay Bruce was among the early arrivals to Spring Training on Monday. Bruce, who was listed at 225 pounds last season, arrived noticeably trimmer.
It wasn't much a mystery or a plot with a twist when it came to figuring out whom the Reds' Opening Day starter would be this year. Johnny Cueto easily had the best season from the rotation in 2011, deserved the opportunity and will get it.
After passing his physical, veteran pitcher Brett Tomko formally signed a Minor League contract with the Reds on Sunday. He is in Major League camp as a non-roster player and participated in the first workout.
Reds manager Dusty Baker knows the questions are coming about his future and job security. On Sunday before his team's first Spring Training workout for pitchers and catchers, Baker made it clear he would no longer field them.
Brandon Phillips, who has been among the most fan-friendly sports figure in the social media world, has used a positive attitude to become a big league star.
Bench production was a strength that the Reds appreciated greatly in 2011. During Spring Training, there should be plenty of jockeying for the precious final spots on the 25-man roster to make up the bench for the 2012 team.
It's been a revolving door in left field for the Reds of late, mostly consisting of platoon situations. That could be the case again in 2012, as the Reds have Chris Heisey and Ryan Ludwick slated to play there.
